Use a Rain Barrel

To Recylcle Rain Water

Recycle rain ? Yes – you can recycle our natural water supply with a simple rain barrel that collects the water running off of the house or shed through the downspouts.

It sounds simple and it is. It also makes sense.Using a barrel to collect water from your roof can:

  • Reduce your water bill
  • Eliminate run off from the downspouts
  • Save water to use during dry spells or water bans
  • Provide clean fresh water without chemicals for watering flowers and plants

You can buy a rain container, or if you're feeling motivated you can make one. Last year I couldn't find and barrels at the stores, only online. This year they were selling out of The Home Depot and Lowes faster than you can water your garden ! I'm glad to see this catching on in the US.

Buying a barrel for conserving and re-using water can put a dent in your wallet. I found them averaging from $100 to $250 for 50- 150 gallon containers. I even found one over $400 for a designer faux wood grained plastic barrel. Wow – who knew collecting rain could be a status symbol?

I looked for ways to make one on my own and found this video below on YouTube ;it's instructions on how to put a rain barrel together.

Check it out- you may be up to this challenge to build one yourself!

Collecting rain is an easy way to conserve water and use our resources wisely. These barrels are easy to connect to the drainage downspouts of your house, and some even have easy-to-use spigots that the hose screws onto for easy watering.

It's not always easy to fit a rain container into front yard landscaping ideas, and plans, but the backyard garden is usually less formal style and easier to incorporate. The side yard garden are probably the best and most inconspicuous place.
