Planting Herbs in Containers- How to
Planting herbs in containers is a great way to experiment. Its fun combining herbs together in one pot and playing with texture and color of each
herb.
You don’t need to worry about blooming times with herbs- because the flowers are not the main event. The leaves are.
• Consider the growth habit and final size of the herbs when combining different types of plants. Make sure that all of the herbs need the same type of growing conditions. Check you plant labels for the specific details.• Also think about the arrangement of the plants. In a round container- place the tallest herb in the middle and the shorter herbs on the outside ring. • In a rectangular or oval container- consider the tallest plant in the middle and work your way down in size on either end. • In the herb or strawberry pot, plant the trailing herbs like thyme herb in the side holes and the bushier taller plants like chives and sage herb out of the top. • Rosemary can get quite large and bushy and is best grown alone in its pot. • Selecting the proper size container is important. Choose one that’s large enough for root growth. If it's too small, you'll be re-potting quickly.

If you’re using only one type of herb, like just
basil herb
– or just parsley in the pot, then you don’t need to think about the composition in the container. Just plant enough so that it’s not too crowded.Planting herb plants for a

1. Place a layer of rock or pebbles at the bottom of the container so that the soil is well drained, and the potting mix won’t plug the drainage hole. You can also line the bottom with newspaper. Read about
choosing the right potting soil .
2. Pour the potting mix into the container about two thirds way from the top . 3. Plant your herb root ball in the mixture. (You want to place all of the herb plants at its original depth as in the nursery container.) After covering the plants to their original depth, the soil should come up to 1 to 2 inches from the top of the pot. 4.Pat down the mixture to get the air out. 5. Adding a layer of small pebbles or mulch on top will keep the plants clean ( no dirt gets splashed up and you can harvest the herbs even after a rain) and also helps retain the moisture in the soil. 6. Water thoroughly right away. Using old containers If the container is old – it’s a good idea to wash it out with water and adding about 10 percent of bleach to remove fungus or mold. Rinse thoroughly with water before planting.
