Planting an Herb Garden

Planting an herb garden is something that almost every gardener eventually does. If you are a cook as well as a gardener, then an herb garden is a must. Picking and then cooking with the fresh herbs is such a treat.

If you’re not a gourmet cook - no worries. Adding these fresh ingredients to the simplest of meals will make them taste even better.

There is nothing difficult or mysterious about planting an herb garden. All you need is

  • at least 4-6 hours of sunlight
  • well drained soil
  • enough water

(Herbs are pretty hardy and grow in almost any type of soil, though they prefer rich dark soil.) There are different ways that you can grow your herbs. They can be…..

  • grown in a container garden
  • directly in the ground -either formal or informal
  • in a raised bed

Evaluate your garden site options, lifestyle and preferences to decide which of these types of herb garden designs will work best for you.( think formal or informal herb garden )

Grow your own Herbs -Additional considerations

  • Herbs thrive in sunny locations needing at least 4-6 hours of sunlight a day

  • Like rich fertile soil

  • Plant in well drained ground

  • Don't like humid weather or over-watering

  • Fertilize for a better quality plant, that will resist disease and pests

    Planting An Herb Garden Checklist

Planting herbs is similar to planting your annual or perennial flowers.

    1. Select an herb garden design style.

    2. Design the herb garden and sketch it out on paper or use software to plan and design.Know how tall and wide each herb will grow so that you can plan accordingly.

    3. Choose a proper well drained site with plenty of sunshine.4-6 hours

    4. Decide on which herbs you want to use in your garden (use what you’ll cook with!) and either purchase the plants or start the seeds indoors.

    5. Prepare the soil –it should be rich and dark. Add compost if needed.

    6. Plant the herbs directly in the ground, or in their new container - at the same level that they were in their seedling pots.

    7. Add mulch to retain moisture and discourage weeds.Small pebbles can be used too.
