Outdoor Water Conservation -Use these water saving tips
I admit it. Most of the time I take our water for granted. But I’m trying to be better at outdoor water conservation and being responsible about using it.
Water conservation is the most cost effective and environmentally sound way to protect this diminishing natural resource.
Recently I took stock of how we use (or abuse) the water usage in our own yard and garden and came up with some easy Do's and Dont's to save water.
Do
- Add a layer of mulch 3-4” around your garden beds, bushes and plants to help retain moisture.
- Do fix any leaky outside faucets.
- Save tap water that's running while you wait for it to heat up – use it to water your container gardens or indoor plants.
- Check your sprinkler- make sure to water only your lawn and gardens- not the driveway, street or sidewalks.
- Do water your gardens, new shrubs and trees less often but more deeply.
- Do remove your weeds often since they compete for the water.
- Do plant native specimens of flowers and plants that use less water.
- Do water in the morning when it's cooler before the day heats up; water can soak to the roots more efficiently.
- Do use ornamental water features like fountains or ponds that use recycled water.
Don’t
- Don’t leave your sprinklers and hose running when not in use.
- Don’t water in the rain! Turn your automatic sprinklers off and only water when needed.Set the controls on the minimum time needed as oftern as you can.
- Don’t water on windy days- it will evaporate before it reaches the plants.
- Don’t over water your lawn. Did you know that with a heavy rain you can go without watering for up to two weeks?
- Don’t hose down your patios, walks and driveways; sweep or use a leaf blower instead.
Try some of these water saving tips in your own home garden . We can all make a difference together.
