List of Herbs

This list of herbs will give you a good start when deciding what to plant and designing your herb garden . These are common kitchen garden plants;none of the herbs grow very tall except maybe the rosemary- check your plant tags or seed packets for details on each when purchasing for your herb garden design.

  • Basil-there are over 200 varieties of basil; with different flavors and colors. The flower can be purple or white. The leaves are used in cooking. Pinch the flowers off to make a bushier plant. Plant in full sun. Annual

  • Chives – ( pictured right) Small onion like plants. Chives have a nice flower in either white or purple. Grows easily from seed. Plant in full sun. Perennial.



  • Dill- Seed and plant are used for flavoring. This tall feathery herb plant is beautiful on its own. Annual

  • Lavender- English Lavender has a wonderful fragrance. It's often used in soaps and lotions. It can also be dried and used in potpourri .Lavender is a great herb to add to your annual or perennial gardens. Full Sun. Perennial




  • Lemon Balm- Smells wonderful! (But attracts bees) you can dry the lemon scented leaves, or use fresh in tea, jelly or as a flavoring. Perennial.

  • Marjoram- Perennial

  • Mint-Peppermint and Spearmint are most popular in the mint family. Use in teas, jelly , salads, sauces. To ensure that you get the flavor that you like, it’s best to purchase small plants rather than trying to grow from seed. Perennial.

  • Oregano- Use in Italian cooking; soups, salads, pizza, sauces. Easily grown from seed, but since there are so many varieties, taste the plants before you buy. Grow in full sun. Perennial.




  • Parsley –Curly and flat(Italian) parsley is grown easily from seed.(it may be a little slow to germinate- but be patient) Great for garnish, in salads, soups and stews. Annual

  • Rosemary-Has a lovely robust aroma. Use for great flavor in soups, sauces, teas, lamb dishes. Can be grown as a bonsai- but must be kept indoors in the winter in northern climates. Plant in sun. Perennial.

  • Sage- Salvia garden sage has whitish leaves. Different varieties have different colored flowers. Plant in full sun. Perennial.

  • Thyme- This is a popular herb garden plant that is easy to grow. It has a spicy aroma and is adaptable to most foods. It works well in rock gardens, between pavers on paths, or as a ground cover. Perennial
