Impatiens

impatiens photo

Impatiens is my trusty filler in the shade garden. I plant this shade flower in and around the hosta and astilbe.

It's also good for those hard to plant shady areas under trees and bushes.

The bright green leaves are small and neat, and the flowers are a wonderful contrast to them.

This plant will bloom all summer with little attention needed. (we like that )

It is an annual plant and will not survive the Zone 5 winter , but can sometimes be brought indoors over the winter.

( I have not had luck bringing these indoors- but others have.)

They can get leggy - but try to cut back to produce a more compact plant

Color

White,pink, orange, red, purple

Blooming Period

Summer until the first frost

Height

Mature height from 6" to 18 "

Uses

  • Use in hanging baskets in the shade - but water often

  • Attracts both hummingbirds and butterflies

  • Use as companion planting with hosta, astilbe, and columbine in your shade garden design

  • Perfect in pots on the patio or deck

  • Use in full shade to part shade gardens

    Care

    Likes moist soil.

Mulching will keep the roots moist.

    They do well when fertilized.

Don't need much dead heading-the small flowers will dry and blow away on their own.

Cut back when the plant gets leggy to encourage a bushier, fuller plant.
