Garden Planters

How to select garden planters or containers

Selecting garden planters and pots for your container garden is such a fun part of the project. You're only limited by your creativity(and the need for good drainage)

My brother made this window box from an old window and recycled wood. I love it !

Look around for new or recycle used items for your potted flowers ; Baskets, tin cans, old boots, waste baskets, anything can be used in your container flower garden.

Look in antique shops, thrift stores, yard sales - and don’t forget your own attic.

Follow good design principles;Your container garden should be compatible with your house and garden style , and containers and pots should be complimentary with each other.

Avoid the confusing look of many different styles and colors of containers -unless your patio landscaping style is completely eclectic and casual. (This is a hard look to pull off though- so forge ahead with care!)

stone flower planters The Ideal Container

  • Holds Water
  • Holds Soil
  • Has good drainage
  • Is durable to stand up to your climate
  • Is attractive;fitting to your house and garden style

Important -If you find something that you’d love to use but without drainage, punch holes into the bottom so that water can escape. If the containers get too water logged, then the plants will not survive.

If you use cookie jars for garden planters, or something else that you can’t poke holes in – then add a thick layer of gravel at the bottom of the pot so that the plant roots don't sit in water.Remember to keep the pots sheltered if left outside- under an eave or awning helps so that the flowers don’t get too rain soaked.

    Flower Container Ideas

OK _ so what else can be used for container planting? Well.....How about cement blocks? This garden looks fabulous using regular concrete blocks filled with impatiens.
Also think about the budget, mood, style, materials, size, drainage, focal point use, area, and scale.Deciding on budget, mood and style up front will get you thinking about the right materials and size that you prefer.

Do you want a casual or formal container garden?

Did you decide to have a whimsical look or a no-nonsense clean and contemporary look. Lots to think about isn’t there.

Take your que from your house style, patio or deck furniture and then select the containers for your garden.....
