Design a Herb Garden

Design a herb garden that fits your lifestyle. Your decisions will depend on a few different factors. Ask yourself these questions:

What’s the purpose of the herb garden?

Are you going to be using the herbs for personal cooking only? Will you grow to dry for use over the winter? Do you have plans to sell your herbs?

How much space is available to plant?

If you’re short on space, container herb gardening may be the ticket for you. If you have loads of space and are deeply committed to herb gardening- then a large formal garden is cool! And then there is the happy medium of a basic kitchen herb garden of maybe 10-20 herb plants.

Time to tend the garden- short on time?

Small gardens work best

What kind of herbs do you like to cook with?

Plant the herbs that you like to use in your cooking unless you’re planning on growing herbs to sell in bulk....

What’s your preference of garden styles?

Do you want to have a more formal feel to your outdoor space? Designing a formal herb knot garden (like the one below) is a bit more advanced- but doable if you stay committed to the project.

The Wagon Wheel herb garden design is simple and casual, and just right for beginning gardeners.

1. Place a large wagon wheel flat on the ground. You may have to bury it a bit so that it lays flat..

2. Fill the areas between the spokes with planting soil and mix. Plant your herbs in the spaces between the spokes for a nice orderly yet simple herb garden.

Creating a circular herb garden with a brick walkway around the parameter is beautiful for your backyard garden.

Another Herb Garden Design option is adding the herbs right into your flower garden for an English herb garden design. Try using Hollyhock, English Lavender, Black-Eyed Susan, Catmint, Feverfew and Veronica in a casual garden bed .

The basic herb garden design that consists of 4-5 kinds of herbs planted in a nice neat row is easy to do , or you can build a raised bed for your herbs.

Design a Herb Garden Tips

  • Plant the herbs that spread quickly in containers so they don’t run rampant after the first year ( and ruin your design!)

  • Follow the basic rule of thumb for plant placement- larger in the back rows or in the middle if you’re planting a circular garden

  • If you are planting a square garden – use flagstone for a walkway or path through it. Crisscross the stone path to create 4 equal quadrants for a formal look , or use a curvy path to meander through for a more casual feel.
