Arbor Day April 30 , 2010

This year I decided to donate to the Arbor Day Foundation and am now a proud card carrying member. On the back of the card states the mission: We hope to inspire people to plant, nurture and celebrate trees.

I think that’s a pretty cool goal.

Trees are so grand and majestic, but we often take them for granted. I donated to the Arbor Day organization because when I think about how trees add so much value to my life and to the planet in general, it makes me sad to think that someday this might be a resource that is limited .

The first Arbor Day happened on April 10 1872; started in Nebraska by a man named Julius Sterling Morton ( 1832-1902)

He was on the board of agriculture and felt that the State of Nebraska would benefit from planting trees, so he planted lots of trees, focused his efforts on saving trees.

The ideas to plant and save trees spread from Nebraska to over 49 states.

The National Arbor Day is always the last Friday in April, but some states celebrate their own holidays that work better in their planting zones.

Go to the Arborday.org website for the list of individual state celebration dates.

Taking the concept and ideas of Arbor Day and bringing them into your own home garden activities carries on the pride and traditions of our past.

Arbor day is a time to reflect on the past, but also focus on the future.

It's the time to take a look around your backyard or front yard landscaping and check the condition of the trees already there. Are they healthy? Do they need trimming or pruning? Is it a good ideas to plant more?

At Arborday.org you can buy trees for yourself, or give them as a gift to someone else to plant. One fun ideas is to give trees as favors to each guest for an environmentally “green “ or organic wedding.
